People may have a pre-conception of what the typical accountant is like, but don’t be misled by the stereotypical “bean-counter” image if you’re considering a career in accounting. There’s a lot more to this job than meets the eye and there are some fantastic career paths open to people with the right qualities.

Would I Suit a Career in Accounting?

If you are the type of person who has a special aptitude for numbers and logical thinking, you could be well suited to a career in accounting. Attention to detail is critical as accuracy is a vital part of accounting. High ethical standards and excellent computer literacy skills are also essential.

Are You a Problem Solver?

Accountants are not just number-crunchers. If finding innovative solutions to a problem excites you, then you could have just what it takes to be a good accountant. Successful accountants have to possess strong analytical skills, be able to interpret facts and figures, and then be creative in solving problems.

Put Your Communication Skills to Good Use

Though you’ll need to able to work by yourself, you’ll almost certainly be part of a team for much of the time. Being able to get along with all kinds of people – from the general public to CEO’s – is vitally important for any accountant, as is the ability to communicate effectively in writing. Social skills will also help you build a network of contacts to further your career.
