Accounting is about tracking how companies run their finances, making sure they keep accurate records and pay their taxes on time. This is a field that is continually evolving and so a career in accounting can offer you a challenging future.

What do Accountants do?

The field of accounting can be divided into four broad categories as follows:

accounting career

Public accounting firms provide auditing, tax, and consulting services for clients who may be individuals, corporations or government. A few accountants can rise to manager or partner level. This obviously means that there is room for growth in this area.

Management accountants work within companies making decisions on budgets, cost analysis, asset management, strategic planning, and business development. They are usually part of an executive team.

Government accountants and auditors are employed in the public sector at local or state level. Work can involve budget analysis or financial management. Many are employed by the Federal Government, where a career path can lead to higher administrative positions.

Internal auditors are responsible for checking their firm’s internal records to ensure that procedures are carried out according to regulations, protecting against mismanagement or fraud. Auditors can specialize in areas such as engineering, law, banking, and health care.

The Changing Nature of Accounting

The advent of sophisticated computer software has led to a change in the way many accountants work. Laborious manual tasks are being replaced by more technical involvement in the actual accounting systems. More accountants are also becoming personal financial advisors as the demand for reliable advice increases. So there are plenty of career choices open to you within the field of accounting.
