Web design is a relatively new profession so there is not yet one definitive career training path. However, you will need to be proficient in certain key skills before embarking on a career in this field. The level and duration of web design courses varies considerably, so you can choose the training path that best suits you.
Start at High School Good web designers can come from a variety of backgrounds, so experience in art, design, graphics, print or computer science can all provide an excellent grounding before enrolling on a specific web design course at college. The more computer classes you can go to at high school, the better. Become familiar with as many design software programs as you can. And when it comes to actually getting a job, some knowledge of business studies will give you the edge.
What will I Learn at College? A wide variety of courses are now available either on-line or on campus. You can purchase a series of on-line courses which cover one particular application or topic, such as Dreamweaver, Flash or Coldfusion. Alternatively, some colleges offer a certificate or diploma in web design for a more all-round skills base. Courses will cover the essential elements that organizations require from a web designer. These are likely to include: HTML, Photoshop, scripting languages such as JavaScript or PHP, web graphics, web security, and information architecture. A degree level college course may also include project management training to enable you to apply your design principles in a business environment. Choose from one of the many training options to launch your career in this dynamic field.
