If you’re considering training to be an accountant, you must already have certain skills at high school before applying to college. You should excel at math, have an aptitude for analyzing figures, and have excellent verbal and written communication skills. A high level of computer literacy is essential as technological developments revolutionize the way accountants work.

Choosing the Right Training Path

In order to obtain professional recognition in the field of accounting and auditing, you will need to gain Certified Public Accountant (CPA) certification from a State Board of Accountancy (a four-part exam over two days). The first step toward this is to take a bachelor’s degree in accounting, or a business degree with accounting elements, at college. This is usually a four-year program. Make sure you check the degree requirements of the state where you hope to obtain your CPA certificate, as this can vary from one state to another. Many states now require 150 semester units (30 hours over the usual four-year bachelor’s degree).

Work Experience will give you the Edge

When it comes to applying for a job, you’ll have an advantage over your competitors if you have already gained some experience in an accounting firm. Many colleges have links with organizations that can offer students the opportunity to work in part-time internships or full-time over the summer break.

Ongoing Professional Training

Once you have your degree, followed by CPA certification, you will need to renew your CPA license by continuing your professional education. If you have the right talents to become an accountant, a rewarding career awaits you.
