Marketing careers offer exciting jobs with high salaries. If you are an energetic and creative individual with great communications skills then marketing could very well be your future. But don’t think that just having a magnetic personality and the gift of the gab is going to be enough. There is strong competition for marketing jobs, and that means that employers can call the shots.

If you are serious about going into marketing then you also need to be serious about your education. A college degree is a must-have, at least at the bachelors level.

What should I major in?

There are no hard and fast rules about your major. Different employers have different requirements. Your optimum program of college study will also depend on whether you want to go into marketing, advertising, or public relations. Relevant college degree programs include subjects such as journalism, sociology or literature. You may find, however, that a liberal arts program and relevant experience will be of more interest to your prospective employer.

Many colleges offer programs focusing on public relations, advertising, and business skills relevant to marketing. It will help you plan if you contact one or more prospective employers and ask what they require. Also look at relevant job adverts and see what qualifications and experience are requested.

Whatever college program you elect to follow, you should look for one which can offer a period of internship. Experience can be key to getting ahead in marketing, and the hands-on experience of working in a real-world situation will lend weight to your resume.
