Keen competition for these jobs is expected, and college graduates with related experience and creativity will have the best opportunities. You can expect high salaries, but long work hours to go along with them. These types of positions were held by about 646,000 people in the U.S. in 2004. Sales managers were in the majority, making up 337,000 followed by marketing managers at 188,000, advertising and promotions managers at 64,000, and public relations managers at 58,000. Job Outlook In the immediate and more distant future, these types of positions will be highly sought after. College graduates will have the best chance. Employers will look for those with the computer skills to conduct advertising, marketing, promotions, public relations, and sales activities on the Internet. Employment for these fields is expected to increase faster than average, from about 18 to 26 percent. Salary Outlook According to a survey by the National Association of Colleges and Employers, starting salaries for marketing managers graduating in 2005 averaged $33,873. Starting salaries for advertising majors averaged $31,340. Salary levels vary substantially by industry, with the highest being for sales and marketing managers, for example, in computer systems design and related services. Other factors deteriming salary are managerial responsibility, length of service, education, size of firm, location, and industry. Many managers can also earn bonuses equal to 10 percent or more of their salaries.
