What kind of person does well in this career Computer programmers are usually people who possess a certain knowledge and understanding of computers, networks, programming languages and other arcane subjects that many people who are more creative-minded can’t comprehend. As a computer programmer, odds are you’ll often feel misunderstood and under-appreciated by your coworkers who stop by to thank you for getting the email system up and running again. But computer networking specialists know that the company would be lost without them, and are often handsomely rewarded after times of crisis. Power outage? System crash? If you can fix the problem in a timely manner, odds are you will see a bonus in your next paycheck. You’ll be spending a lot of time inside an office building, so it’s best if you don’t mind a pasty-white monitor tan. Computer network engineers are frequently expected to put in long hours and to be on call for emergencies. On the other hand, they are often paid very well for their ability to avoid crises and take care of major problems immediately. Computer networking specialists must be attentive to detail so they can pick out errors and inconsistencies in code that looks like gibberish to most people in the company. They also must be willing to work long hours at crunch times, before the launch of a major product or service, for example. But if you can put up with that, your career as a computer networking specialist will be satisfying, challenging and well rewarding.
