Why do you think you’ll be a good fit for a job in cosmetology? Cosmetologists are people who are creative, outgoing, and independent. They enjoy a great deal of freedom in their careers, from the choice to specialize in haircutting, coloring, facials or nails, to the decision to rent a station at a salon or open up one of their own. A good head for business and an excellent work ethic will serve you well if you decide to pursue a career in cosmetology.

Two things are important to survive as a cosmetologist: a strong personality and a strong body. Many hairstylists end up functioning as a therapist to their clients as well as a stylist! Be prepared to listen to everything from marital conflicts to worries about your clients’ appearance and weight. Diplomacy and tact will take you a long way, as well as the refusal to let negative comments or clients angry with an unsatisfactory cut ruin your day.

Creativity is also a must for cosmetologists (and a good outlet for those who can’t support themselves by painting, singing or dancing). Many hair color specialists enjoy free rein to experiment with bright reds, blondes and browns. In bigger cities it’s possible to cater to a more independent or counterculture market with vibrant hues of purple, blue, green and red.

Cosmetologists must anticipate putting in long hours standing behind a chair, so it’s best to stay in shape and take care of your body. Advances have been made in ergonomic techniques to make the work easier, but what’s a little back or shoulder pain when you’re doing something you love?
