Educator Characteristics and Traits
What type of person doe it take to be an educator? You’re thinking about becoming an educator, but do you have the personality for it? Teachers inspire their students to learn and provide the right environment and opportunities for learning. Teachers need to be creative, be organized, have a passion for teaching others and be able to work with diverse student populations.
Creativity Students learn in a variety of ways. Some learn best by reading, some through hands-on practice, some learn best individually, and some learn best in a group. A great educator needs to be able to develop lesson plans and activities to address the different learning styles and abilities of their students.
Organizational skills You may be teaching the same students all day or have several students rotate through your classroom throughout the day. Either way, you need to have excellent organizational skills to coordinate the different lessons, activities, and paperwork of teaching.
Passion to teach others You must enjoy what you do. Your students will know if you like the subject you are teaching and if you enjoy teaching itself. When you have a passion for your subject and for teaching, it is a winning combination that will inspire your students to learn.
Ability to work with a diverse student population The student population of most schools, especially those in urban areas, is quite diverse. As an educator, you need to be prepared to work with a diverse student population and be able to adjust your lesson plans to meet the needs of your students.
