Training as an engineer will entail several years of study, so you will naturally want to know what employment and salary outlook you can expect to reward your dedication.
Engineering employment outlook Engineers held around 1.4 million jobs in 2004. About 555,000 were in manufacturing and 378,000 in professional and technical services. 194,000 engineers worked for government departments. Overall, engineering employment is expected to grow at the average rate for all jobs through year 2014. A slowdown in employment in manufacturing will be offset by increased requirement for engineers in service industries. Technology is key to modern business, and engineers will be needed to increase productivity and undertake research. The rate of employment growth will vary between engineering disciplines, but the world cannot manage without engineers, so this is always a career area with a good outlook.
Engineering salary levels Engineering jobs vary greatly and so do the salary levels. It depends on the type of work and your seniority and qualifications. You will be glad to know that engineers enjoy some of the best average starting salaries of all bachelor’s degree graduates. A 2005 survey undertaken by the National Association of Colleges and Employers showed bachelor’s degree starting salaries ranging from around $50-60,000. As your career develops, you can look forward to earning much more. Earnings over $100,000 annually are not unusual. A senior petroleum engineer could make around $140,000 as at May 2004. 2005 mean annual salaries in government employment ranged from $70,086 for agricultural engineers to £100,059 for ceramic engineers.
