Marketing offers exciting and well-paid careers. There is therefore strong competition for work in marketing, advertising, and similar spheres. If you are considering a career in marketing, what personal qualities should you have if you are going to make it?

You should certainly be ambitious, energetic and outgoing. You will need excellent communications skills, and to be good at dealing with people. You need an ability to understand what makes consumers tick, and how people think. You should also be interested in computers and the Internet, which are a prominent feature of modern marketing practice.

If you want to work in advertising, you will need good creative skills, and the ability to work well with your clients.

If you are going to succeed in marketing you will be someone who relishes a work routine which can be demanding and unpredictable. Marketing careers can involve a lot of traveling, sometimes internationally, so you should be happy to move around. You should be the type of person who takes naturally to hard work and hours which can be long. You should be comfortable working under pressure, and meeting deadlines.

You will also need the ability to study and succeed at college level. Employers expect candidates for marketing positions to have at least a bachelor’s degree. If you want to get ahead, then a master’s degree will be even better. Being ambitious, creative, and hard-working needs to be combined with the discipline and thinking and skills you will gain from a college program.
