As a massage therapist you would be trained to use a wide range of different massage techniques (or “modalities”). You may already have heard of prominent examples, such as deep tissue massage, Swedish massage, or sports massage. Massage therapists use their hands to apply different kinds of strokes, depending on the type of massage and the medical needs of the client. Massage therapy can be used for sports injuries, muscular strains, stress reduction, and to treat many other ailments.

While the requirements to work in massage therapy vary from state to state, formal training should be seen as central to the development of your career.

The majority of massage therapists are self-employed, generally owning their own massage business. As a self-employed therapist, you would receive clients at your premises, or visit them in their homes or other locations. Being able to develop a rapport with your clients so they keep coming back would be a key skill in developing your career. Other massage therapists work in locations such as sports centers, physician’s offices, hospitals, and airports. Many therapists work part-time, enjoying a flexible work schedule. Massage therapy is a fast-growing area of work which can offer a rewarding career to skilled and well-trained practitioners.
