As a paralegal, you will work as an assistant to a lawyer. Other career opportunities also exist in government agencies, legal firms and in the legal departments of large corporations. Paralegal studies cover general areas like legal documents and language, so you will need to figure out which area of the law moves you most: personal cases like divorce, inheritance and living wills and trusts; patents and copyrights; or criminal cases.

Paralegals often work in law firms as assistants and partners to lawyers, although you may find work as a freelance paralegal. Becoming certified as a Notary Public will help you considerably if you decide to make your career a freelance one. From researching the case to requesting and retrieving records and documents, as well as putting together exhibits and gathering evidence, the paralegal is an important part of any law practice. As you work under an attorney, so the attorney is responsible for your actions. It is best to find a good match for employment. Although some duties are limited to licensed attorneys, paralegals can still take an active role in putting together a lawyer’s arguments and supplying all the necessary evidence, materials and documents their lawyer will need to try the case.
