The World Travel and Tourism Council estimates that one in every 12 people is employed in a travel or tourism career. Most jobs in this field are expected to grow as countries recognize the huge impact tourism can have on their economies.

Travel and tourism careers reach far beyond the traditional travel agent. Many tourism careers involve constant travel, such as working on a cruise ship or as a flight attendant. And, on your off days, you can become a tourist yourself.

Many travel tourism careers are now linked with hospitality, such as working in a souvenir shop, manning a reception desk at a hotel, or managing a golf course. Cruise ships and large resorts have opened the travel industry to non-traditional travel careers such as chefs, florists, and entertainers.

As worldwide interest in travel has increased, so has the number of magazines about travel. This means more jobs for travel writers, both as fulltime employees and as freelancers.

Travel jobs today can incorporate almost any interest. Tourists can now take eco-trips, adventure tours, educational tours, and vacations where they do volunteer work. Many travel and tourism professionals offer specialty trips based on interests and age.

If you’ve got the travel bug, there has never been a better time to look for a job in the travel and tourism industry. Whether you work as a tour guide or a hotel manager, opportunities abound to help others travel – and do a good bit of traveling yourself.
