According to the AIGA/Aquent Survey of Design Salaries, the average salary for a web designer in 2005 was $52,000. Despite a drop in the communication design economy following the dot -com crash a few years ago, the employment market for web designers is picking up and looking decidedly optimistic for the future.

A Promising Outlook for Web Designers

The Internet has established itself as part of everyday life, becoming more accessible to users all the time. Every organization, whether non-profit or business, is waking up to the fact that a website is an essential element of any marketing strategy. The scope for designing websites is therefore enormous, ranging from small businesses just embracing the notion of a web presence to multi-nationals wishing to up-date and re-design their existing sites. With the current healthy economic outlook, and an increasing realization among those in commerce that innovative design is crucial to business success, the demand for talented web designers is set to grow. Employment in computer-related occupations is forecast to increase 27% or more between 2004 and 2014, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, making it one of the fastest growing areas of employment.

Salaries Set to Rise

After a period of stagnating salaries compared to the1990’s, the outlook is improving as wages are now picking up steadily. Designers who enter the profession with a qualification in web design, web development or visual communications can expect their skills to attract a higher salary and more exciting career opportunities.
